Basic Concept

There are some basic concepts that you should know and understand before you start house training your dog.

  • The first few months of a dogs life is crucial to how he will be throughout his life. Habits are learned and broken during the first few months of life.
  • Dogs do not like and will avoid at all cost to “soil” where they rest.
  • Since a dog’s instinctive nature is to find a den, a house will satisfy the natural instinct to den.
  • Dogs can be trained to react to a conditional stimulus.
  • The best way to teach a dog something is through positive reinforcements. Food treats, and good praise should be used to reinforce positive behavior.

Patience is they to house breaking a new puppy. It is imperative that you start to house train a puppy the same day you take him home. If a puppy gets comfortable without the need of a house for the first couple days/weeks then it will be that much harder to train it.

Since a puppy’s bladder is tiny, there will be the need to take it out to use the bathroom at least 6 times a day. It is recommended that you take a puppy out after a meal to relieve pressure on the colon and bladder. Puppy’s natural instinct is to defecate and urinate away from the “den” area. The habit of soiling away from a den only lasts for the first few weeks. If not trained properly, a dog will loose the natural instinct. That is why the first three months of a puppies life lays the foundation of how he will be behave for the rest of his life. It is easier to train a puppy on new habits than it is to reverse an old one.

Successful Tips on Dog House Training

  • The size of the dog house is very important in correctly house training a dog. A dog should have enough room to get up and stretch out if needed. Too big of a dog house will eliminate the “den” feeling and too small of a house will be uncomfortable. Therefore, precise on the size of house you are going to buy. Note that there is a dog house separator that creates the feeling of a natural den if a dog house is too big.
  • Guide a puppy to the preferred spot for eliminating waste. Overtime it will become the preferred spot for the puppy.
  • On the first day of bringing home a puppy, make his dog house as comforting as possible. Put toys, treats, and a warm blanket inside the house to create the feeling of a personal room.
  • Make sure to use positive reinforcement on a learning puppy. Everything that he does correctly make sure you show him. Toys, treats, and even a belly rub will get the point across.
  • Dogs are not able to associate past mistakes with a correction form. If you see a mess and didn’t see the puppy do it, clean it up without scolding the dog.
  • Make sure you thoroughly clean a mess if it happens indoor. Without properly cleaning a spot where the dog has gone to the bathroom, he may return to the same spot.
